I would like to thank the church for graciously hosting the \\\"MYGAMES\\\" study each week since June. The research study would not have been possible without the church\\\'s generous support.
The \\\"MYGAMES\\\" study is a pilot project funded by the Alzheimer\\\'s Disease Research Center at the University of Pittsburgh that is led by myself (Dr. Tiffany Hughes) and Jason Flatt (a doctoral student in public health at the University of Pittsburgh).
The goal of the project is to compare the health benefits of playing the Nintendo Wii, a popular interactive video game, and a healthy aging education program in 20 older adults from the Mon Valley region.
The program lasted 24 weeks, with health assessments before and after. Additional health assessments are planned for early summer to examine whether any health improvements are maintained over time.
Currently, we are examining the information collected
with the hopes of publishing the findings in a scientific journal and receiving additional funds to continue the program.
The church was the perfect location for the program. Playing the Wii on screen was the ideal set-up, and the small room adjacent to the gym was ideal for the health education program. We also took advantage of the kitchen and made healthy snacks for the participants. This lended well to the healthy aging education program. The accessibility of the church was also very important for some the our seniors using canes and walkers for assistance.
We look foward to seeing you again in the summer of 2012. Thank you again for your support.
All the Best and Happy Holidays!
